Onboard laps
#1
I've decided to upload a few onboards from qualifying laps. So far I've done the F1 at Silverstone, F3 at Spa, and Radical at Donington. Hopefully this helps a few people out.

Thanks that's awesome. I am not able to do evening races so can't do the F1 series, but I was trying it out as practice a few days ago just to see how my pace was (I appreciate that you put up a setup in the forums too). I couldn't get a good time in and I was wishing that I could watch an onboard lap like this to compare with and easily see my major mistakes, so this is very useful.

One thing that would make it better is if you also had the pedal inputs app open in the HUD too, so we could see things like how much of the brake you press when trail braking, etc. as that is not immediately obvious without seeing the inputs.

The only other thing is I couldn't see when you used KERS. However AC in the replays does not capture this in the output (the gears app you have up doesn't show any change and I tried it myself with the sidekick app where it also didn't show my usage in the replay) so there's nothing you can do there I think when using the replay system. I assume you use it at the start of the two main straights, Wellington and Hangar, with maybe more of it used on the Hangar straight since its longer. Or would you split it more so some is used after exiting Luffield?

Anyway, thanks again. You didn't have to do this but it is very much appreciated.

I cleared all the apps I use normally and forgot to put the pedals one back on before recording. Easy enough to enable next time though.

Replays don't show KERS which is a bit annoying. I used about 30% out of The Loop/through Aintree, 30% out of Luffield, about 20% through Chapel curve and the last 20% out of Club. You get more benefit using it at low speed to accelerate faster so I prefer to split it up more over the lap. In the race though I was using it to overtake and defend so I sometimes used it all in one hit.

Cool, thanks.

Nice, thanks for sharing! I'll definitely try your setup for the next race in the FW31! You carried so much more speed through Abbey and Copse!
Amazing list of awesome achievements: 5th Lotus 25 2018, 4th DRM 2019, 5th Williams FW14 vs. Ferrari 643 2019, 3rd Ferrari 312T vs. Lotus 72D 2020

Watkins Glen qualifying: https://youtu.be/wf3aV9iGw4c

I didn't have the same confidence this race during qualifying but the lap is still quite good. Setup is almost the same as Silverstone but with 5 on the rear wing.

F3 at the Nurburgring: https://youtu.be/xu-xi_RBKZQ

There seems to be a big gap between a few people and the pack so hopefully this helps. Watch the RPM I change gear at.

A commentary on my opening laps in the F1 car at Kyalami. It's the first time I've tried to do commentary so let me know what you think. Definitely a bit crazy but with a moral to the story: https://youtu.be/36Cqe8Jl554

Also my pole lap from the F1 at the Red Bull Ring: https://youtu.be/rnsq3XErKEU

Kyalami Track Guide and How I Learn Circuits

I think what I do is a bit unusual so it may be interesting. The qualifying lap without commentary is also on the channel.

Very cool. I always tell myself to memorize the names of the corners, but I always blow it off (usually when one or more corners is something not in English I can't wrap my mouth around). It seems like the word association tricks to tell you HOW you are supposed to drive through the corner is the part that might be the most helpful for actual racing. Otherwise I think it might just be helpful if you want to actually do commentary and sound like you know wtf you are talking about. Big Grin

I also like that you discuss the concept of finding the limit immediately and dialing it back. While yes, it is a sim so you don't have to worry about getting hurt (or going bankrupt) I think with experience in the car itself it's probably faster overall to start dialed back and push forward into the limit. While you can just stay out there recovering from a full spin, you will be able to pull more laps quicker by always making them until you don't. If you are learning both the car and the track, it's a wash... or possibly just easily faster to start full and dial back.

I look forward to future vids. Smile
