I would say "you can't expect everyone to follow the SAME rules exactly". It's the first time I hear that you wouldn't have a legitimate claim with as much overlap as depicted in that picture. Surely, the smallest overlap is the safest, as you say Michael. Anyway, anything where you have to check "where have I reached ?", "where has he reached ?", AND make an exact assessment, is highly improbable in my opinion. The smallest overlap is generous to the attacker, so more passes, and it's clear enough that when there is none, the defender can close the door without hesitation.
