It can sometimes help to put out a message in the shoutbox at the top of the SRS screen, asking if anyone is waiting for more people. I have found that just asking the question can get a handful of lurkers to commit to the race.

So... does anyone know why attendance seems to have halved this year?

If you register and there are less than 6 participants, results don't count.
So you can stay registered and if less than 6 start you won't be penalised.

Any way to schedule with others ahead of time. Using discord or something else?
Would love to race more but every time I check on here there's no one registered.
If I knew the popular times I would just focus on those

I've noticed the most action is during European "prime-time", like GMT 4pm to 11pm.
Check the Current Standings page, click "Races" of the car you like and open the different race times. You'll see the busy/slow patterns.
In the US, it's pretty much all mid-day for full fields and sporadic in the evenings.
Good luck!

Like Rob said, participation is mostly shifted towards European time zones. Evenings for American time zones are almost dead unfortunately. That's why signing up early is a good idea.
