Not really sure as I'm not familiar with GIMP, but it sounds like the mode of the image is not in RGB? Maybe this: https://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-image-...t-rgb.html
Edit: Point me to where you got the template and I'll tell you what's wrong with it (maybe). This car is setup so you can do a detail pass on the exterior, and then change the overall color with a simple alteration to a tiny texture called metal_detail.dds. For my skin I just made that texture full white and then put all the color I wanted into Exterior_Body_AO.dds.
