This season's daily races are a bit much for the regular sim racer, yes.
But as far as I remember it, the iRacing version of the Spec Racers felt pretty similar. So it can't be all off.
The engine definitely is over sensitive, yes. AFAIC those are relatively cheap race cars for regular people. Those engines should be able to handle a certain amount of abuse, I'd say.
