5 Golden Rules / Race Briefing
#31
I think he might also be POSTING drunk if he thinks that divebombing should ever be explicitly permitted in any rules for car racing. I've reported people specifically for divebombing and they've gotten suspensions or in some cases bans. Given that, in the unlikely event that Henrique comes in thiis thread and says "hay guys I love your rewrite of the rules and think it's a wonderful idea to put a MOTD at all the servers I'l get right on doing those changes," I don't think there will be a line included that says "if you feel like divebombing and end up not actually hitting anyone, it's perfectly okay".

It`s not the case of it being permitted but rather the case of it not being forbidden. Creates a grey area that should be done away with.

Does not matter if you report divebombers since they do not know what is the exact reason for being penalised. They will keep doing it until the SRS rules list the maneuver as clearly forbidden.

I totally agree that more explicit rules should be posted. I'm just saying that 1) the posted rules probably won't get changed no matter how long this thread gets, and 2) you should assume divebombs are forbidden if you have any sim-racing experience at all, whether it is posted in the rules or not.

GT2 race yesterday was another wreckfest, i was thinking looking at someone who recorded the first laps, really half of the cars should have been totaled or at least heavily damaged at this point, like you have to go to pit repair and calm the f down. I remember there used to be a time the US servers had 100% damage, it would probably make people think twice, as long it's 60% some are going to keep at it, the car may feel a little funny but you can still drive it fine.

The issue here is also, everybody is amped up, trying to go flat when there s a wreck ahead, days of thunder style ... someone lifts, he gets run over.

Oh, but number 2 is what this thread is essentially about. The exact 'phenomenon' simracers experience - do I race by the "known by all simracing rules" or "SRS rules"?

The sheer vagueness of SRS rules makes people go out and search the racing protocol most people use - some search for the used in real series, some in virtual leagues. Hence not everyone taking part in SRS races by the same rules, and that should be changed.

You surely must have heard for example of the other maneuver that is forbidden by some racing leagues - that is gaining position alongside and immediately placing yourself in front of your opponent seconds before the braking point. Don`t know how they call it, but I`m sure it is frowned upon.

However, based on the feedback I got here I realised that there is no consensus on basic rules (such as allowing or not dive bombing), and as a consequence we have disputes where each driver is playing based on different rules, which is a recipe for disaster. Therefore I adjusted this post to be a suggestion to revise the SRS regulation.

This is the current SRS regulation (http://www.simracingsystem.com/regulation.php):

- Never drive the wrong way
- Abusive contact between vehicles is forbidden
- Do not cause accidents on warmup laps
- Respect yellow and blue flags
- Chat is not allowed

I like the fact that they kept it short and simple. However, I don't think they are properly covering the main issues we enconter on SRS servers, and certainly not in a didatic way. For example, "abusive contact" is subjective and should be more specific, preferably with video examples, since we have many new players that join us everyweek. The info about overtaking rules and ethics are scattered accross the foruns and it took me years to learn concepts that now I find obvious, so it would be great if SRS could accelerate this process.

Here is a suggestion for revisiting the Basic Rules of SRS, based on the accidents I have seen here and my experience with rules of other online communities which I found very effective (with some revisions based on the feed back here):

1- Nobody wins a rece in T1, but many loose it It's hard to win a race on T1, but it is easy to loose it. Break early Be extra carefull on T1.
2- You need to pass half the rear of the other car on the straight to gain the right to dispute on the braking. Don't dive bomb.
3- Always leave space for you opponent. Don't cut or push him out of the track.
4- If you hit another car, wait and return behind your victim to prevent protests.
5- Respect blue flags.

Number 2 and 3 certainly deserves videos demonstrating dos and don'ts, but I could not find any good one on youtube. If you find (or produce) any, please share!

Some very good points. As far as video demonstrations, I found these two to be very helpful:

What do you think?

Both fair examples.

EmptyBox tends to ramble a bit and also tends to undo a lot of his explaination when he starts talking about "well... towards the end of the race, of course you are going to 'send it'! That's racing!" Bullshit overtake attempts are bullshit on lap 1 or lap 99. Smile

Although I get what you're saying. If you manage to be on the inside of the corner whilst coming from behind and you're beside him half a car length or fully, the guy in front hasn't done a proper job of defending. That's all fair in my book as long as you don't run wide yourself, and in turn run him off.

Haha yes that last bit was a little iffy in terms of 'good' advice. At least if you get lunged at in the beginning of the race you have the chance to recover; not so much on the last lap.

Just realised that you have one rule missing.

6- Don't make multiple sideways moves to defend ( Weaving )
