Skin Tutorial (2d)
#11
Can't help much with the artistry side but can give pointers in how to make the skins.

Made a start on this today. Decided to go for the BMW 1M as it's quite an easy car to learn on. Basic design but i think that's good if your just starting out.
And BMWs are also great police cars.

Gone for a step by step written guide to what needs to be done as well as a video of the process. Hopefully that way it'll cover everything and you can cross reference the two. I know for me reading how it's done doesn't always make sense but seeing it helps alot.

So far covered
Gimp and the plugins install
Where to get the templates
How to paint on the template using layers
How to export the skin file.

To do
Where to put the files.
How to preview them in AC showroom

except......when somebody else uses your skin in a race, nothing you can do about it, maybe put PRIVATE SKIN in the preview. Big Grin

Yes, that could be a problem, but do such kind of people exist? Huh
Last series I was laying in my bed and tuned into a P1 race. I was surprised when I saw my car driving around. I was confused, because I'm pretty sure I wasn't driving at the moment  Big Grin

It's a bit dick move to just use somebody else's skin without asking. Doesn't matter if it looks good or not, somebody still spent their time to make it, and you could at least ask or let the author know. But nothing you can do about it. After all, if you want to parade around in a car with my name and flag on it, who am I to stop you  Big Grin

Back on topic: tutorial would be nice. I think I personally have technical aspect covered (artistry is another thing  Big Grin ), but I'd love to see how some other people are doing it.
I think there are many ppl who don't realize certain skins are private. When I first started I also just picked any skin that I liked. Wouldn't call it a dick move. It's simply ignorance

Many folks just don't make a preview.jpg that actually shows a picture of the car to discourage selections from people that don't understand that it erks livery makers.

Me personally I feel like preview.jpg is sometimes the only time people will get to see my hard work. During the race you'll typically only see the rear bumper, and that's only until the lights go out... then my car just gets smaller and smaller. Wink

Great, and a good car choice seeing that a series with it has just started. Definitely looking forward to it dude, thank you! Is it going to be just a couple of youtube videos or are you planning on releasing it also as a pdf?

@Russell
That's the pros of doing team skins. I quite often get to see my work on track. It was a bit strange in the Ginetta GT3 last series. One race i'd done all but one of the skins racing lol.

@ Andrea
I was going to it in the same format as Russells post. And add a few videos to show how each step is done.

Currently it's on google docs but i could make it into .pdf to download if that would be usefull.

Ok, what I meant was if it was going to be a text based document or just videos, any format should be ok I suppose, as long as we can navigate the contents easily. Thanks for the link to Russell's post, I did not know it even existed (I'm a new user) and of course many thanks to Russell too for the huge effort and great content  Big Grin

If you are going to format it for these forums, I highly recommend creating/editing it in your favorite text editor and copy/pasting it into your post using the "< >" View Source button. It's this thing:

I promise the WYSIWYG editor on this forum will eat a big post if you edit it that way. More than once. Big Grin

Oh, and if you don't have Greenshot, I highly recommend it for all your tutorial-creating needs. It's what I just made the above graphic using and it took about 6 seconds total, including uploading to imgur.

Russells is a great link and i'd recommend reading it even if your not using 3d software.

I'll make a new thread when it's finished but this is where i'm up to. Still a long way to go.

IDK, maybe "dick move" is a bit harsh, but ignorance is not an excuse. Everything about custom skins is literally in the instructions. I mean, it's not against any rules, but it's common sense that you don't use something which has somebody's name on it. But at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. I don't believe there's any ill intent behind people using someone else's skins. Like you've said, people like what they see and just use it. And I can be OK with that, as long as they are not sharing them on third party sites, or making money of it.

So far, concept looks good. But I would like to see how you approach painting lines. Like these yellowish around the doors and headlights. Do I have to hold my cat while I'm painting or...? Big Grin And other thing I would like to see is how to get nice wavy line which follows car edges. Like these on the Merc. I mean, there has to be better way than using small brush and painting it by hand over wireframe. Right? Right?  Huh

Cat is optional lol.
I can expand on how I did the lines. Pretty much it's using the lassoo tool to mark out where you want and fill in the lines . I'll do that bit as a video. As it'll be easier.
Be warned doing lines like that can get very VERY time consuming!
