Is there a way to ensure I am in a race lobby with my friends? Like a join as group feature or something similar.

No.
People are put in the the races by grouped their skill rating and by how many points they have in the championship.
Usually all the people that are competing in the championship are in one race. That way people who fight for the championship are always in the same race.
So when you and your freinds have attended a couple of races in the series you want to race, you should be in the same race.
