I haven't done this method in a long time, but one of the really cool things you can do with Mudbox/Photoshop is export your current camera position to a PSD, then paint right on top of the 2d image created, then re-import it back to Mudbox from the same camera position as a stencil. Not sure if that would have made the above example easier or not, but it's a really cool option. Especially if you want to do some doodling using better line art tools found in Photoshop.
