Skinning newbie, file size.
#1
Hi,

I've tried my hand at making some skins and although I can get the skins working in game, I can't upload them to SRS as they are larger than the maximum MB number.

How do I save the skins so they are within the required limits?

Thanks

All of the files combined in your folder has to be under 10MB (I think it is actually like 9.8MB?). There's a few things you can do to easily cut down on filesize:
  • Delete the textures you don't actually need. If you don't have a required texture present, the car will show the car's default for that texture. So things like rims, tires, driver suits/gloves, etc.. can usually be skipped. Preview the car in Content Manager's CM Showroom and you can add and remove files and see the result update in real time.
  • Down res bigger textures, especially if they don't matter beyond a few meters in game. Body paint looks fine in game at 2048x2048. Most 2D image manipulation programs can do a fine job shrinking textures down without losing much detail.
  • Lose the Alpha channel if you don't need one. DDS files can have extra bloat if there is an Alpha channel that is all black anyway (i.e. it isn't doing anything). Delete that channel if it doesn't change the quality of your skin.
  • Similar to the above, change the export properties of the DDS from DXT5 to DXT3 or even 1. Googling info on these compression types lead meĀ here. In many cases, smaller files still look fine.
Hope that helps!

Maybe you still have your .psd files in the skin folder?
