Tatuus FA1 Liveries!
#21
Hi Russell, really impressed by your work!
Just wondering about using skins in the races, do people prefer that no-one else uses their personal skin on SRS? I've occasionally selected other people's because they look great, but suddenly realised they might be a bit annoyed! Wondering if it's best to just stick to the stock skins?

I think there's a consensus that it's "not done" to use other people's skins. There was a thread about this earlier.
But I DO think that people around here are nice enough to let you use a variation of their skins. Maybe with a different number or something...
I know I wouldn't mind, but I'd like you to ask first though... I'd even be prepared to edit the skin FOR you... Big Grin

Indeed Max, for me it's a DO NOT. Unless maybe if you ask nicely ? Smile
As for a variation, I suppose. But remember one of the purposes of a skin, for me at least, is to be easily recognized on track.

Yeah, some livery artists have gone as far as to straight up not create a preview.jpg that shows their car in order to dissuade people it wasn't made for using it. Stan Donit's skins for the SimPit crew come to mind... it is basically a placard that says "This skin is specifically for X created by Y".

I personally can't not create a preview.jpg that includes an image of the artwork as to me that's one way that people can quickly check out what your skin looks like... but even mind pretty much spells out that it is a custom skin for a particular person.

All that said, there is no real way to prevent folks from using any skin on their hard drive, as that's how skins work in the first place. Doing so will annoy some people, and really piss off others.

And as Robin mentions... it may be that the skin's normal user would be happy to share their design with you with a few tweaks. Drop them a PM on here and ask. Or better yet... just put in a request for your own skin. See link below. Tongue

How do you feel about the skins you create being used by other drivers than the ones you created them for Russell? The skin you created for me looks awesome and personally I wouldn't be annoyed if someone else used it. Can't blame them for having good taste. I'd feel a bit differently if that was something that bothered you though.

I've come to terms with the fact that there is no desire to police it programatically (not even sure it is possible on the SRS side anyway), so why be bothered by it? All we can do is try to educate people that they shouldn't just click on a livery.png icon at registration that looks cool and register with it and hope for the best. Some folks in the other thread are, as I said, REALLY pissed about it. I dunno... maybe some folks are pouring way too much effort into their custom skins and feel entitled to be the sole user of all that work, where I spend between 2 and 5 hours on a skin so the biggest reaction you'll likely get out of me if someone else uses it is "Hey man... do you want your OWN skin? Because I can make that happen!" Big Grin

Now I'm just picturing you stood on a street corner in a long black cloak filled with USB pen drives going "Psst... Hey you... Yeah you... Want some skins!?" Big Grin
