Okay, but :
1 - "substantial", "up to say", this is rather vague.
2 - Where is the front of your car ? The wing ? The bumper ? The front axle ?
3 - Do you get of your car to measure it ?

One thing that should be kept in mind that these things often depend on the specific racing series.

I would say "you can't expect everyone to follow the SAME rules exactly". It's the first time I hear that you wouldn't have a legitimate claim with as much overlap as depicted in that picture. Surely, the smallest overlap is the safest, as you say Michael. Anyway, anything where you have to check "where have I reached ?", "where has he reached ?", AND make an exact assessment, is highly improbable in my opinion. The smallest overlap is generous to the attacker, so more passes, and it's clear enough that when there is none, the defender can close the door without hesitation.

"often depend on the specific racing series" ? Can you elaborate ?

I mean IRL. I have seen definitions of overlap that gives the corner to the car attacking on the inside to be anywhere from "any overlap" to "front wing to rear wheel" to "front wheel to rear wheel" to "nose to the number on the side" etc.

Ah okay, thanks. Interesting. Well, with SRS hosting so many series, the smallest overlap is really the way to go.

but this is not so easy, you can get that small overlap by dive bomb so the "leading car" then has zero time to reactwhen is pointed in ideal line and returm back to GPL era, there was no tripple screens, VR or helicorsa, the car which go side to overlap is in blind spots to leading car so bed timed overtakings usualy ended in crashes, so overtaking car must do so that overtaken car know what is goind on, so rear car must show his plans

I understand but we have Helicorsa now, so we know much better what's going on.

And, the overlap has to be there before braking, I thought it was always assumed, so dive bombing remains the risky maneuver that it is.

Yeah "divebombing" is attempting to start overlapping on the inside after the braking zone of the racing line (i.e. where the outside car is going to be). If a dive bomber is going to hit you, he's going to hit you. Likely even if you give them room, dive bombs by their nature are usually going to go well wider than the "inside line" and are going to hit you anyway. Only way to avoid it completely is if you somehow possibly understand it is going to happen and then purposefully keep going straight... assuming the track allows it. And then likely get a slow down penalty (I'm thinking of Monza T1 here btw).

so there is too many driver which are unknow how they behave on track, on leagues i know every racer so i can react right ,here it is nearly impossible

Idiot until proven otherwise, is how I approach every overtake. It typically serves me well.
