I saw the "pit window open"  appear on my sscreen and assumed a pit stop is mandatory? Can anyone confirm if pits are mandatory for the current rsr series?

Yes, for the 1 hour Porsche RSR series there is a mandatory pit stop that must be taken within the pit window. The minimum requirement for the pit stop to count is adding 1l of fuel or a tire change
