MX-5 with autoclutch is for boys...
#11
I have a clutch pedal but it feels like crap the times I've tried it. Am I doing something wrong? I do think I'm losing time easing off the throttle to shift up with the paddles though.

Nope you have to lift the throttle, in fact you don´t need to but it sounds really stupid if your´re shifting without lifting.
This all happens in milliseconds anyways, so it really doesn´t matter. It just feels weired when you don´t lift while shifting a h pattern shifted car.

The method with clutch and paddles is probably also not the easiest thing to learn.

great idea if you want a dead or low participant series

You are reading it too seriously, it was only a joke.
Nonetheless I get your point, but I ran at Laguna Seca last Sunday evening and there were 4 active servers for that race; I think we are not so low in numbers, am I wrong?

It would be interesting to see how many that number would drop to if auto clutch and auto blip were required disabled, assuming that makes it impossible to race without a clutch at all. If the game still lets you slam it into gears for 20 minutes without destroying the car, it probably wouldn't change the numbers all that much. Of course there would likely be another thread started asking WTF. Wink

But if the lack of these assists allowed made the car totally un-drive-able without the clutch? I have no idea. I would guess you wouldn't fill up a single server (<23 drivers). Just a guess however.

Hopefully we'll never have to find out and everyone will just deal with scrubs like me using paddle shifters pretending my Mazda is a Ferrari. Big Grin

Sir, indeed your Mazda is a Ferrari! A Ferrari from the seventies with clutch and manual transmission Smile
Oh come on! Have you ever tried at least?

Yeah, I had a G27 for a long while and last year I did quite a bit of league racing where I used the H shifter and clutch. In some cars in some sims it is a substantial advantage to do things the hard way, but  given that I'm relatively slow compared to people who are super serious about their sim racing, I would typically opt to remove as many variables while trying to drive perfect lines among other people. Besides... most video game clutches feel absolutely nothing like a real clutch (certainly not the one on the G27). It essentially just felt like pushing another button with a stupidly long throw for no real reason other than to gain a few revs per shift.

Since then I've upgraded to a T300 with an F1 wheel (dual pedals only and a great see-saw paddle shifter mechanism) and haven't looked back.

Yes, game clutches feel crap. Also, aside from race starts and using it on downshifts into bends like trail braking, clutches don't have much use in a race. Just ease off the gas to relax tension on the gearbox, let in snick into the next gear then back on the gas.

Because there's no feel or biting point with a game clutch there's no point in having a long throw pedal. Race starts and controlling it into bends feels disconnected without feeling the biting point.

I remember years ago playing Forza (1 or 2) with a controller and finding I had an advantage with the clutch on, set to the A button. Just rock your thumb from A to X to go up or from A to B to go down. No connection to the real world but it was a bit quicker than the time it took the auto clutch to shift.

Speaking of shifting in the MX-5 Cup, does anyone else rev to the limiter each shift? Looking at the torque curve it looks better to shift early but on track it feels quicker to go to the redline.

Having said that, there's not a huge amount of difference and there are some bends you can take in 2 different gears and still come out at around the same speed.

I don’t think the clutch pedals are the problem, it’s actually the shifters and their lack of feedback.

In race cars the clutch is only used for starting and when you’re going slow anyways. But to properly shift without the clutch, you need to feel the shifter or at least it should prevent you from shifting when not possible.

That only applies to cars with sequential or dog boxes,  a standard manual as the MX5 has required the clutch to change gears
