Apologies for asking, but could someone point me in the right direction to work out how to most simply do my own skins?

That's a tricky one to answer. Some people find it easier in 3D and others (including me) prefer to do it in 2D. The only way you're going to know what works best for you is to try it out.

Max I have a super simple template I can post up. I'll make a video guide when I've finished today's jobs.

Done a quick video walk through. No commentary so any questions just ask. The showroom in the video didn't show but it was there when recording.

This is f138 \ gimp specific.
Assumes you have basic knowledge of how to use imaging editing software. tools, layers etc.
You need to work on the skin.xcf file. Then merge and export to a .dds
The gimp plugin just copy into the plugin folder. No need to run it (there is a read me with the file)
Watching the mouse shows you which options to use.
Read Russells post. It will help with file placement and give you tips on how to edit.
Practice, Practice, Practice
I've been using image editing for 20+ years and still get  Huh moments.

Colour layer for your colour. Set Opacity at 50-60% to see the carbon weave.
Logos layer for logos. Erase mine as they are just there for reference.

You will need
gimp
https://www.gimp.org/
gimp.dds plugin
http://registry.gimp.org/node/70
template folder

I also recommend Russells tutorial as it has lots of usefull information

There will be a full guide done at a later date when i find time using just opensource/free software.
