It's usually the Supersofts that burst into flames in a couple of corners. I would be surprised at least the meds can't hold up in 20m at regular rate, some tracks build pressure and heat slowly but constantly though, even with some good chunk of life left if the tyres overheat you are in trouble, that's maybe more what you were experiencing, as degradation double or triple quickly when it's out of the working range temperatures.
