Cockpits? - David Iglesias - 01-23-2019
Hi,
I always felt quite uncomfortable on my chair while driving, specially since I started using Oculus, and I've been thinking in buying a cockpit.
I'm looking for something small and not too expensive, can you guys recommend me something?

Protip: don't buy a racing chair for your rig. Go and junkyard dive for a car seat that is COMFORTABLE. Racing seats are typically not made for marathon sitting sessions and are more geared toward keeping you in the seat against lateral G-forces (of which you should be feeling zero of, unless you threw 10k+ at your cockpit and have it up on hydrolics or something). Get something you could sit in for hours and hours. Your butt and back with thank you.

I am very satisfied with the Playseat Challenge, but it has it's downsides.
Pros:
* Comfortable even over longer sessions.
* Very stable, despite its appearance.
* FFB makes the entire chair rumble, gives more immersion IMO.
* Entry/exit is accommodated by swinging aside the steering wheel mount.
* Mounting plate is solid and has screw holes, and it has 6 different positions.
* Can be folded and stored quickly and easily.
* Comes with velcro straps to run cables neatly, and for storage.
* Nice quality and finish.
Cons:
* Not well suited for peripherals like h-shifters and handbrakes.
* Expensive for such a limited product.
Cons exclusive to steering wheels without screw holes:
* My Thrustmaster T150 has a clamp mount and no screw holes, so it only sits firmly in an awkward position.
* I'm 180cm, not very tall, but because my T150 only works in an offset position to the mounting plate, I need the chair to be in its most laidback position to not have the steering wheel at elbow's length.

Playseat was my first option but I've heard that it's design is not really comfortable for legs, specially when braking with the right foot.
Seeing the prices that these things costs, maybe a DIY solution would be the right choice for me, as I don't want to expend that much money for the little time I can spend in simracing. Thank you all.

The cheaper ones made of wood or PVC can be done fairly cheaply... especially if you already have a few tools needed. Extrusion aluminium or the like is going to cost, however.
