SRS + CrewChief = Awesome! - David Weber - 08-21-2018

I'm sure many of you are aware of CrewChief. If not, I'd like to share how much enjoyment it has added to my SRS races. I'm not the developer nor do I know him or benefit from promoting the software. He offers it for free (donations accepted). Download available here. It runs on AC, PC1&2, RaceRoom, rFactor 2, and iRacing

The software adds (1) a verbal spotter and (2) a crew chief who will share things with you throughout the race or upon request (using voice recognition through your microphone).

Spotter
Here's an example of what the spotter might say if I'm making passing an opponent on the right:
  • "On your left"
  • "Still there..."
  • "Still there..."
  • "Clear left"
I still keep Helicorsa running, but I find myself not needing to look at it as frequently.

Crew Chief
The crew chief gives verbal updates throughout the race on many things including:
  • Positions
  • Laps and sector times
  • Tire temperatures and wear
  • Brake wear
  • Gaps ahead/behind
  • Damage
  • Fuel
  • Yellow/Blue flags
You can change the frequency of each type of message. And you can select from a list of hundreds of names to be called for personalization. With the microphone, I can ask dozens of different questions like the location of an opponent by name, who is ahead/behind, how much fuel I have left, what's my fastest lap, etc. Here is a partial list of voice commands that CrewChief recognizes.

Since I've been using it, I rely less and less on the AC apps on my screen. It's added another dimension of immersion and has made races even more fun (and clean), especially in VR when the clarity of the apps is lacking. I feel like I'm racing with a real spotter and crew chief on my team helping me race the best I can.
Below is a video of it in action:

Well. I think the Helicorsa proposal is a bit better than spotter, IMHO. Crew Chief needs a lot of improvement, for example, when there is a car right after the first overtook you. I got involved in 2 accidents like this in RaceRoom, for example.

Yes, is a possibility Eduardo, personally I don't change line untill i get the "Clear" output from my spotter, maybe you can increment the frequency of the "Still there" output in the properties, not to cause this problem again... but a radar is surely more effective there, I agree...

Nice post David, I was thinking about doing one very similar myself, I really like this app, can't race without it now, for Raceroom it is really good, not being moddable and having an extremely basic HUD, the informations it gives you are very hard, sometimes even impossible to get by yourself...

I use both Car Radar and Helicorsa combined, as well as CrewChief. I want information overload because my lack of driving skill would otherwise make me a danger to myself and others!

Yep for me this really is the most essential addition to AC after RealHeadMotion.

If you haven’t yet found the setting to make Jim (the Crew Cheif himself) swear at you, go and find it now!

The setting is called:
Use sweary messages (Boolean)
You can search the settings (properties) page so you don’t have to scroll through looking for the right setting.

Immersion value = +9000

Yes, this is definitely the most important option Big Grin

"For fuck's sake, Russell; they'll delete this lap." - Jim
