My first in-real-life friend has just joined SRS and I sent him a "buddy" request.
What does it mean for us to be "buddies" on SRS? Thank you!
(FYI I did a forum search and a Google search and was unable to locate an answer)

As far as I can tell, it's just a forum feature that is available. Mostly it looks like just an easy way to PM someone from your Control Panel. I don't think it does much of anything else.

Yeah it's pretty much just a way to quickly check if someone is online or to pm them
