Last night I quit a race because I did not realize it was going to be an hour long. I would like to know what the penalty is

Nothing about what you lose by quitting a race early, unfortunately. Just FYI, the GT races are all 1 hour long. Everything else (at least in Assetto Corsa) is 20 minutes, currently.

I think the 1-hour races have mandatory pitstop. When the pitlane is open you get a message on the top of the screen, with a countdown. Yesterday the pitlane was open for 10 minutes at around half of the race. You need to stop and at least add 1 L of fuel (I added fuel and changed tires).
